HUD Celebrates the Fair Housing Act at 50

The National Association of Realtors 2018 Fair Housing Act Commemoration Campaign:
Fair Housing Makes U.S. Stronger - Commemorating 50 Years of the Fair Housing Act

Smithsonian National Museum of American History - "Within These Walls" Exhibition

  • On January 1, 2018, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History opened a new display case as part of its "Within These Walls" exhibition to share the story of the signing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The new addition to the exhibition is sharing information about "the landmark civil rights legislation [that] was the result of years of individual and collective struggle against discrimination in sales, financing, rental and other housing-related transactions." Two objects on display are the pen used by President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign the Fair Housing Act and a handout promoting fair housing in Bowie, Maryland in 1963. "Images from the signing, protests and a contemporary campaign to raise public awareness bring the story to life."
